BOSTON RHAPSODY
In July 2025, a new and very unusual work for solo violin was released, written by six composers who met through a series of virtual workshops sponsored by The Boston New Music Initiative. Each composer wrote ten bars, passing only the tenth and last bar to the next composer, who would not begin composing until he saw it. No one had any idea of the contents of the other nine bars (or of the piece) that preceded his. " Boston Rhapsody" is the resulting composition, with scores compiled by Bill Taylor and performed by An Vedi, violinist, composer, conductor and visual artist of international renown. A review can be found at Modern Classical Music.
The composers are: Bill Taylor (bars 1-10) An Vedi (bars 11-20) Melika M. Fitzhugh (bars 21-30), Deborah Yardley Beers (bars 31-40), Stan Cohen (bars 41-50) and Chris Kolakowski (bars 51-60).
This unusual experiment was recorded in a 4-minute short, which was presented at the Festival de Música en Cine, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2025. Conducted by An Vedi herself, who has won international awards and competitions as a violinist, composer, chamber musician, singer, director and filmmaker. Youngest recipient of the Edward Elgar Medal (2019, UK). An Vedi graduated from the Moscow Conservatory and did graduate studies with honors. He has been performing on stage for more than 25 years.
The short is a magnificent listening experience.
