"In Need of Seawater", is a film that lasts a little less than half an hour. It is advertised as being about a poet, Mark Anthony Thomas, whom I admit I did not know, though it may be more about the influence that his poetry or life had on Richard Yeagley, his conductor.

The presence of actors does not detract from its documentary character. Clearly explores in depth the poems that still have influence after decades. Although it does not appear in a formal way, the short is poetic, as it updates what poetry means as a questionnaire of life itself.

I understand that there is unpublished material, and the fact that it is a poet who has not perhaps had too much transcendence, makes this look almost an autopsy, not of a man, but of the sense of poetry.

I think Yeagley sees the poet as someone who weaponizes himself through searching and questioning, who sees almost as revelations. And maybe it is so. Perhaps life has a different sense, or deeper or more aesthetic, if you go through poetry.
In the specific case of this poet, Mark Anthony Thomas, there is also an activist concern when he focuses on a certain problem that has to do exclusively with the United States.

Richard Yeagley is a director, editor and producer with more than 12 years of non-fiction film experience. His work includes feature-length documentaries, short films and television projects, with credits on PBS, NPR, Vice TV, The New Yorker, Hulu, Tubi and Amazon. As a freelance filmmaker, he has collaborated with numerous production companies to tell complex human-centered stories with clarity, depth and cinematic precision.
