Viaticum

It is fascinating when something, regularly taken as seriously as religion, is treated as a joke. Not many writers or directors have advanced in this way that surpasses the superficial, which is why "Viaticum" is so interesting.

We are talking about a short film of almost fifteen minutes, in black and white, directed by a collaborator of Tim Burton. I say this because Derek Frey has been a permanent contributor since he joined Tim Burton Productions in 1996.

The actors David Amadio, Gil Damon and Steve Kuzmick are worth mentioning because they are also the writers of an incredible plot full of controversy.

It is a case of extreme unction. This ritual, by which the Catholic Church prepares a man to die, includes a confession. In this case, the recognition of a murder, which is a mortal sin, generates a theological discussion between a priest and a nurse.  It’s a black comedy.

The son of the one who is going to die is a salsa lover and wants to dip the sacramental bread in it. In reality, everything serves to show the general incongruity of all arguments.

Can we be sure that Derek Frey dabbles in atheism? No, but I would bet that he does. I understand that the ongoing discussion on this issue is necessary, as it generates too many conflicts and traumas. I enjoyed the black and white treatment, which is unfortunately so little used lately.

If Frey’s intention was to entertain us and generate controversy, he succeeded widely.
