"PLAN BEA" is an Australian musical, designed for a teenage audience, but with the basic characteristics of a commercial studio production. But it is not. It has had the basic limitations of independent school production. Performed efficiently by a group of actors who may not be professionals, with a truly pleasant music, it achieves a very high level that allows to predict a reasonable success of audience.
Perhaps all responsibility for the outcome lies with its director, Sean Peter, who is a graduate of Southern Cross University’s contemporary music degree as well as AFTRS' graduate film script program.
Sean received an AWGIE award for his musical Everything’s F**ked, which premiered in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands. Also received the AGSC/APRA award for Best Children’s TV Music for the television movie "The Adventures of Charlotte and Henry," plus countless nominations.
Sean is the arranger for the current titles of the iconic Play School, as well as composer and lyricist of Playschool and "Giggle and Hoot". His work on Disney’s "Talking Friends" has garnered nearly a billion views and is currently among the top ten most popular Disney views on YouTube. He was the music director and composer of Jimmy Rees' live show and composed music for Expo 2020 in Dubai, as well as being a technology consultant on numerous commercial musicals such as Hamilton and Moulin Rouge to name a few.
Peter has said that "for some children, the school musical is the only reason to go to school. They find their group. Their community. Their authentic self. They sing, dance, are part of the stage team. It’s the beginning of so many professional careers that it’s a cliché in itself."
In the pandemic years, 2020 and 2021, children were banned from singing and dancing. At St Ives High, an Australian public school, instead of cancelling a 2021 musical, they decided to turn around and create an original teen musical, "Plan Bea". 100 children participated. A minimum budget of the school and physical education department. Fundraising, crowdfunding and a volunteer team of parents, teachers and alumni. Professional cinematographer, choreographers and Harvard University (HMU). 60 days of shooting, during 20 months, during closures and sprouts, nights, weekends and holidays, gave rise to "Pan Bea". Worth a look.
